Description

The Penn Fathom II 20 Level Wind Line Counter Reel is built for boat anglers who need to know exactly where their bait or lure is sitting in the water column. Dropping onto deep-water wrecks, trolling open water or searching out mid-water bait shoals all depend on fishing at a precise depth, and the reel's mechanical line counter removes the guesswork by letting you return to the same strike zone time after time. The chassis uses a full metal body with matching sideplates, keeping the internal high-torque gears in alignment when winching heavy loads under pressure. Inside, the HT-100 carbon fibre drag system provides smooth, heat-dispersing stopping power, and the Fast Gear Access Sideplate allows quick access to the main gear train for maintenance without the risk of losing internal springs or small parts. - Model Size: 20 - Gear Ratio: 5.5:1 - Monofilament Capacity: 315 yards / 20lb mono - Braided Line Capacity: 645 yards / 30lb braid - Depth Tracking: Integrated, heavy-duty mechanical Line Counter display - Chassis Structure: Full Metal Body and structural sideplates - Drag System: Heavy-duty HT-100 carbon fibre drag washers - Bearings: 4+1 Shielded Stainless Steel Bearing System - Spool Features: Machined aluminum spool with built-in Line Capacity Rings - Level Wind System: Heavy-duty synchronized level wind system for uniform line lay Where it works well: - Precision deep-wreck jigging: a strong choice for cod, ling and pollack over deep-water wrecks. When fish are marked holding a set distance above the structure, you can drop an artificial eel or pirk to the exact reading on the counter, keeping the lure in the feeding zone and clear of tackle-snatching metalwork below. - Mid-water pelagic trolling: suited to surface lures, diving plugs and spoon setups for species such as tope and mackerel. The counter shows how many yards of line are deployed behind the boat, so a trolling spread can be spaced accurately. - Deep channel uptiding: for anchoring in fast-flowing saltwater channels, the synchronized level wind lays thick monofilament or braided line flat onto the spool, reducing line bedding when cranking heavy leads through the tide. Calibrating the line counter: for the counter to read accurately, the spool must be filled to the outer edge of the Line Capacity Rings. Mechanical line counters calculate depth from the revolutions of a fully loaded spool diameter, so an underfilled reel turns faster and the counter will over-read. If you prefer a thinner diameter braid, load the spool with inexpensive monofilament backing until you reach the inner capacity ring, then top it off with your braid for accurate tracking. Does the level wind system stay engaged when casting or releasing line? Yes. The level wind is fully synchronized, so the line guide moves back and forth across the spool during both the retrieve and the drop. This removes sharp line angles and gives a uniform line lay, reducing friction and helping prevent line wraps. Is the line counter display digital or mechanical, and can it handle saltwater? The line counter is a fully mechanical, gear-driven system sealed behind an impact-resistant clear window. It does not rely on electronic screens or batteries, so it will not fail through flat batteries or freezing temperatures, and it is resilient to heavy saltwater spray and rain. What is the main advantage of the Fast Gear Access Sideplate? On traditional multiplier reels, a basic grease top-up meant dismantling the sideplate, risking the loss of tiny internal springs and anti-reverse dogs. This design uses a dedicated hatch secured by captive screws: back the screws out, slide the access panel off, and you can clean and lubricate the main gear train in seconds before sealing it back up.
