The Shimano Catana FD is a freshwater and in-shore saltwater spinning reel that covers a wide range of angling situations, from lightweight and medium sized lures through to match and feeder fishing. It sits at the affordable end of the Shimano range while borrowing design elements from the brand's top reels, making it a sensible choice for anyone wanting a dependable freshwater spinning reel without spending a lot. The G-Free XT-7 mainbody gives the reel a noticeably improved balance in use, a design feature carried over from Shimano's best reels, and one that makes long sessions easier on the hands. Smoothness comes from a combination of three Shimano stainless steel ball bearings plus a roller bearing, which keeps performance trouble free even when playing larger fish. The aluminium spool uses an AR-C design, and together with the Varispeed II line lay system this improves casting distance and accuracy with both mono and braided lines. The Catana pairs well with low and mid-priced Shimano rods to form a balanced setup. There are seven models in the range, including fast speed HG versions, spanning the smallest 1000 size for lightweight finesse fishing up to the largest 4000 size for larger lures and heavy feeder fishing.
