The Shimano Ultegra XSE Competition Reel is a long range casting reel built on one of Shimano's best selling platforms, aimed at surfcasters and anglers who want distance without stepping up to flagship money. It shares its core technology with the XTE, but comes in a lighter silver finish rather than the darker stealth colours of its stablemate. At the heart of the reel is a lightweight, rigid CI4+ body housing HAGANE Gear and X-SHIP, which combine with Infinity Drive and Silent Drive to deliver smooth, light rotation. Under pressure the reel still produces plenty of power, but it is the casting performance that defines it. Super Slow 5 Oscillation lays line on the spool with exceptional evenness, reducing friction and adding distance, while Rigid Cast limits spool deflection at the moment of release and Parallel Body sends line towards the first guide at the optimum angle. Line flowing over the lip of the aluminium AR-C spool coils down as it leaves, further cutting friction. The result is long range casting performance that stands out at this price point.
