Description
The Tenryu Red Monster Special (A841) is a 7' 3" two-piece heavy popping rod built for travelling anglers who need to cast large poppers and then hold a powerful fish away from structure. It sits at the top of the Tenryu range in terms of power, and is designed for boat fishing rather than shore casting. The blank is made from 95% carbon and 5% glass. The high carbon content keeps the rod light and responsive for its 80-200g casting weight, so working large surface lures such as 150g poppers remains manageable over a long session. The 5% glass adds a small amount of extra elasticity, which helps absorb the initial strike of a big GT or Bluefin Tuna and reduces the risk of the blank failing under high-sticking angles. At 7' 3" (2.21m), the rod is shorter than a typical shore-casting model but gives better leverage over the deck of a boat. That shorter length makes it easier to work a popper across the surface and to pull against a heavy fish once it dives. It is a two-piece rod, typically butt-jointed, and the main blank section is roughly 5' 6" to 6' long, so it fits most standard travel tubes. Typical uses include: - Tropical expeditions: targeting giant trevally, Cubera Snapper and Roosterfish in destinations such as Gabon and Guinea Bissau. - European tuna: casting large stickbaits and poppers for Bluefin Tuna in the Mediterranean or UK waters. - Heavy surface iron: throwing 150g and heavier lures into boiling schools of baitfish where reach and control matter. - Extreme reef fishing: pulling a 40kg Amberjack away from a coral head quickly. Because the blank is 95% carbon, recovery after the cast is fast, which helps impart the correct action to large poppers. The rod has a considerable amount of lifting power, so it is best matched with a strong reel — a high-end 14000 or 18000 size spinning reel with the drag set firmly. Specifications: - Model: Tenryu Red Monster Special (A841) - Length: 7' 3" (2.21m) - Lure/Casting Weight: 80-200g (Heavy Popping) - Sections: 2-Piece (Butt Joint) - Blank Composition: 95% Carbon / 5% Glass - Action: Extra-Fast / Heavy Power - Guides: Fuji Titanium/SiC (Heavy Duty) - Origin: Made in Japan - Handle: Premium High-Density EVA Offshore Grip The 7' 3" length is intended primarily for offshore boat work. It can be cast from the shore, but a 9ft or 10ft rod is a better choice for pure shore casting; for tuna and GT from a boat, this length is well suited to the limited space and leverage required. The 5% glass content is included because pure high-modulus carbon can be brittle under the extreme angles common in tropical fishing. The glass adds toughness and impact resistance, allowing the rod to bend into a deep parabolic arc during a fight without snapping. After use in tropical saltwater, rinse the rod thoroughly with fresh, lukewarm water, paying particular attention to the guide feet and reel seat threads. A light wipe-down with a silicone cloth will help keep the finish in good condition.
